How this started
Eight solar lights went in along a path in September and by November half of them came on for twenty minutes and then quit. The listing had promised eight hours. Nothing was faulty — the panels were rated for a summer day and the battery was a quarter of the size the run time implied.
None of those numbers were anywhere on the page. Panel size, battery capacity and the conditions behind the run-time figure are on every listing here, because without all three the run time means nothing at all.
Eight hours of light is a claim about the battery, the panel and the weather — not about the lamp.
Our commitment
Battery capacity and panel size published
Milliamp-hours and panel dimensions on every listing. A run-time figure without those two numbers cannot be checked by anybody, and we will not print one on its own.
Run time given with its conditions
Stated as hours after a full day of direct sun in clear weather, and we say plainly that a monsoon week or a shaded wall will cut it.
Ingress rating as the maker states it
Passed on as supplied and marked as their figure. We do not upgrade a rating in our own description, and we do not call anything waterproof when the rating says splash resistant.
What we will not print
No lumen figure appears on a listing unless the maker supplies it, because a number invented in a description is worse than no number. Where a light is bright enough to mark an edge but not to read by, the page says exactly that.
